Mysterious Maco Lights

According to this legend the fate of Joe Baldwin was decided. One day long ago in 1867 a horrible train wreck occurred. A freight train was chugging slowly along the track. The line it was on was supposed to be clear. The flagman in the felt a jerk. He looked and was alarmed to see that the coupling holding the train together had come loose. He looked and found his lantern. But it was too late to save the caboose because a fast moving passenger train was bearing down the track at the little caboose. The passenger train bore down onto the small caboose while the caboose was over a swamp. The caboose was knocked over and Joe Baldwin was decapitated, his head flying into the swamp, never to be seen again. They recovered his body. Some people say that on full moons, when you are riding along the track, when you reach the swamp, you can still see Joe, swinging his lantern trying to find his missing head. Some see the lights of the wrecked trains fading into the swamp.

Brown Mountain Train Wreck

One day while I was hiking near Brown Mountain NC, my dad told me a story. He told me the story of the train wreck from a very long time ago. There was a night train slowly chugging down the track line. When it got down into the valley the train quickened it's pace. The flagman fell asleep and the engineers couldn't see the track in front of them. The track had bee ripped up, probably by some random dude trying to earn cash. The train flew off the track and into the woods. Some people say if you listen closely on moonlit nights, you can still see the lights of the train trying to get home. Some people also claim that they can hear the screams and the screeching brakes from the train. 1.1238224440.old-steam-train.jpg
